Hi All,

Motherboard MSI B85M-E45 (MS-7817) BIOS Date 20150421
Intel Core i5-4670K
Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1600 C9 2x4GB
Nvidia GTX 760
Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB (S-ATA)
DVD (S-ATA)
PSU Coolermaster G650M
Razer Deathadder, Deathstalker 2013 (USB Mouse and Keyboard)
No overclocking
OS Windows 8.1

All patches (OS, drivers, BIOS, etc) installed.
All diagnostics are fine. Memcheck, chkdsk, etc. Kaspersky finds no viruses anywhere.
CR2032 system battery replaced yesterday.
No recent changes to HW or SW (battery replaced long after problems started).

PROBLEM: PC has been working fine for two years but recently has begun to start very sluggishly when rebooting from Windows, displaying A2 error message in lower right corner for ages, often eventually starts but only after 5 mins or so. Get the feeling there's no power to the disk when PC's sitting there with the A2, since disk light isn't lit.

However: Shutting PC down from within Windows, letting it settle down, cutting 230v AC power (=On/Off switch on PSU) for 30 secs and then starting always gives flawless and fast starts, windows up and running in seconds. A2 error flashing by for a sec or so, thats all.

http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/2287231 benchmark indicates no obvious problems.

Any ideas whats going on? Faulty PSU? Disk giving up on me? Bad capacitor on MB?

yeah back that drive up and get a new one...I would be very weary of it considering the reported issues.

I agree. Used to work in the industry but it's been ages since I fiddled with PCs. Thanks for the tip on checking the SMART data :)

I'll be off buying a new disk, then. Any ideas on how to best backup and replace? RAID/mirror and then take the old disk offline?

Oh, forgot. Why the consequent boot success when starting from power off if the disk is the sole culprit? Thinking of the possibility of there being other problems (motherboard or so) too.
