Should I buy an FX 8350 or an i5 6300

Here's the thing. I have been wanting to upgrade my i3 4160, but if I went the skylake i5 route, I would end up having to not only upgrade my motherboard and processor, but my ram as well, and it might end up being a real pain in the ass to have to spend that much money just because I want some extra performance processor wise(livestreaming, etc.) Anyhow, if I go with the 8350, I can keep my ram and not have to upgrade that as well, plus it seems to me like it would be the better livestreamer (even though I know that the cores are slower). Anyway any advice?

Neither. Drop an i5 4xxx or i7 4xxx into your existing motherboard. An FX-8350 would be a side-grade from your i3 and slower than a 4xxx i5, and it's not worth changing motherboards and RAM for Skylake's ~10% performance per clock advantage.

There is no i5-6300, there's a 6400, 6500, 6600 & 6600K AFAIK.

The i5 will be the better all-round performer. Either the i5 or 8350 will require a new board, so I'm not sure of the argument other than RAM.

I'd suggest looking to upgrade within the same socket. An i7-4790 or 4790K would be the 'top of the line' and compatible with your current board. I'd be surprised if it would cost much more than a Skylake i5+Board+RAM, and the i7 gains for streaming etc would give you much better performance over an i5 that's one generation enwer......
