I am looking to upgrade my graphics card on a PC that I built. Asus P6X58D-E Motherboard, i7 950 3.07GHz, 24Gb Ram. I want to upgrade the Graphics Card to give me some real horsepower. I'm not so much a gamer but I do a lot of Photoshop photographic and graphics work and I want to support two 24 inch monitors. The Motherboard is equipped with Expansion Slots
3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x16, x8, x8 or x16, x16, x1)
1 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI
Any thoughts, recommendations?

I have been considering cards such as the Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix Graphics Card (4GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0) or a GeForce GTX 980 Ti GAMING 6GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI 3x DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card.

Solution
you can upgrade to any modern GPU including GTX 1070/1080/Titan
If you are leaning toward GTX 980Ti perfromance level, GTX 1070 is a better option. Much more lower power consumption -> lower heat -> less noise.
Generally, you want to put the GPU in the x16 slot that is closest to CPU socket - this slot is using all 16 PCIe lanes from CPU.
