I have a Hitachi 4TB Deskstar drive (HDS724040ALE640) that is over 4 years old (and obviously out of warranty), which for about half of it's life resided in my desktop HP system. Early on, this drive started exhibiting read problems and at times could not even be accessed. I had formatted it in two partitions and had not populated either partition more than 75%, during the time I was using it. It was a secondary drive, so there was no effect on the OS. When it would give me access problems, I would put it in an external enclosure and it would perform better, but always had read issues. I ran WinDFT, several times and have never passed the long test, due to read errors. I have managed to salvage the contents of the drive, to another drive, but it was a slow, painstaking procedure. I have refornatted the drive, back to a single partition, and tried transferring some files for a test, which went well until it started slowing down again. Does anyone have a clue what I can do, other than pitching the drive, to make it usable and trustworthy again?

Hi there bluegoldwing,

That is unpleasant. :(
Unfortunately, when a drive starts failing, there's nothing much you can do.
Anyway, you can test it and provide a screenshot of the SMART report. Let's see what's wrong with it: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Apart from that, in many cases, a failing secondary drive could affect the overall system performance. :)

Let me know how this goes,
