What would be the better choice? Motherboard/cpu or a graphics card.

I'm torn on what to get. I want to get what will work best for my computer to help in performance I mainly play games on it with a little school work here and there as for games I'm all over I play a ton of counter strike and right now have just picked up battlefield 1 but I play a wide range of games from very demanding to not so demanding. Right now I have a intel i5 4460 with an asrock h97m micro with some basic ram, 8 GBs. I wanna get a new skylake. I was thinking going with the i5 6600k and asus z170. If I didn't do that I would change out my graphics card which is a r9 390 and get a gtx 1080. Right now I'm leaning to the cpu and motherboard because I don't want to buy a graphics card at 600 dollars and then a new one comes next year I'd rather just put up with my graphics card now and just get the next new one. But at the same time am I really going to notice a difference with a new motherboard and cpu? What would be a better investment of my money?

No it's unlikely an r9 390 will get bottlenecked by your current CPU, although there is no definitive answer when it comes to bottlenecking, and will vary game to game with various other factors, like chipset, RAM etc alo making a difference. Generally speaking though, nah I dont think so. The best person to judge is you. Check your CPU usage with the games you play, and check whether your CPU utilization is hitting 99%.

An i5 6600k will be plenty for a 1080 for now, although in future with DX12 games it's hard to say. Obviously an i7 will be more future proof, as it would support 11 or even 12 series GPU's when the time comes, but at the moment it is overkill for purely gaming purposes.

I would advised to upgrade the CPU and Mobo first before you drop that much money on a card that could be bottle-necked by your old system.

The 1080 will come down in price the CPU and Mobo will likely not change much.

If you wanna see a noticeable improvement, go for a new GPU. CPU upgrade usually does not help a lot in most cases.
New cards always come out and take down old one, if you worry about that it will be hard to upgrade.

False installing a 1080 in that system is like putting race fuel in a Geo Metro. It doesn't yield better results. It would be a large waste of money installing a 1080 on the current setup.

I probably should have made this a discussion because now I have more questions. Would the i5 6600k be an ok cpu for a 1080 or should i just shoot for the gold and get an i7. I've read a lot of places saying an i7 is like overkill for gaming because it really doesn't need it. The other thing is do you think my 390 is getting bottleneck right now?
