do you notice a spike in fans during the spike in disk usage?? Do you have current update of windows 10? I would definitely get all latest windows updates and see if that can help. I had this issue on a gaming laptop that I have. It's a Lenvo Y700 series similar specs but with a 960m gpu in it. From what I can tell it seems to be an issue associated with HDD and windows 10 because I actually returned an ASUS ROGs desktop I had with an HDD on it for same brand but different style of desktop that had a SSD as its only storage and I haven't had any issues with it. Also typing this from an Alienware Aurora R3 with windows 7 on it and I never get the disk usage spikes on this either.

I've looked up thousands of searches because I too experienced the problem with multiple devices. With the laptop I tried all the fixes you tried too and it still has the spike but the only real solution I've found with that is to never turn it off and only put it to sleep. It always happens after being turned on but functions fine after awakeing from sleep. I returned the other device I was having this problem on so you could always try that or exchange it too, especially if you've only had it for a day. Sorry if this isn;t exactly what you want to hear but it is practical and an easy way to find out if it was just hardware or pinpoint it to software.

Another easy thing you could try before returning would be to just do a factory reset and slowly install software you want starting with antivirus and so on and just keep your task manager running to monitor the disk. Try and see if maybe certain software may be affecting you. There are many different ways to go about this as you can see.
