A few days ago I started to canvas for a new processor for my pc, because the current one i have (amd a8 6600k) is trash, especially since my gpu is a 970. I narrowed it down to an i7 4790 or an i5 6500, however, the i5 6600k caught my attention earlier, and I was wondering if i would need to buy something like a z97 mobo or a high end mobo to go with the 6600k since it can be overclocked, but the only reason i would get the 6600k is because as far as i know (correct me if i'm wrong) it runs at a higher speed out of the box than the 6500. I don't really overclock, so if i can just get a standard 1151 mobo to go with the 6600k, that would be great. Any advice would be much appreciated. :D

Hi Sir How Are U?

i5 6600k Without Oc Got A Very Little Difference With i5 6500 . So i Suggest U 2 way :)

1. Buy The i5 6500 Instead Of i5 6600k And Dont Waste Ur Money And Try To Avoid See The Little Difference And Buy An Standard Mobo For It

Or

2.Buy The i5 6600k And A Z Series And Try To Overclock . :) And U See About 20-25-30 % More Performance :)

No Offence Bro But Its A Little Unwisely Decision To Buy A K Series Cpu And Wasting Money Without Overclocking :)

Hope U Can Realize well

Sorry For My Bad English

No real point in paying extra for an i5-6600k if you aren't overclocking it, so it would be better to stick to lower price locked i5 processors, or if you can manage it an i7-6700 with a cheaper B150 motherboard.

AMD Ryzen CPU's are releasing in 1 month and they're rumored to be more powerful than Intel i5's at a similar price range, so if you're not buying now it might then be better to wait it out.

i'm not sure if i wanna go amd though :( is the i7 4790 an option here? if i get the 6500 i'll need a new mobo and new ddr4 ram as well, if i go i7 4790 i'll just need a new mobo and the price will come out just about the same.

If you're looking to keep your ram and considering lga1150 cpu's, maybe take a look at the xeon 1231v3 prices in your area and compare to the 4790. Unlike the newer xeons (6th gen) they will run on h97, z97, b85 etc. The 6600k does run at a slightly faster speed out of the box, it turbo's up to 3.9 while the 6500 turbo boosts up to 3.6ghz.

The 4790 turbo's up to 4ghz, the 1231v3 turbo's up to 3.8ghz. Both have hyper threading, the xeon lacks the integrated graphics. Going by new prices in usd, the 4790 is $300 and the 1231v3 is $240.
