I know that ram should be bought in sets, it works better.
But if i'm mostly gaming and I have a used computer with 4 gigs of ram. should I add 4 more gigs of ram or buy 8?
I want to buy a used i5 but thats normally whats available.

You would significantly increase the chances for RAM to work if you knew the exact model of memory in the system you wish to purchase and then somehow find/buy the identical one.

But in general, the safest route is to get a dual channel kit.
