400 dollar asus 1070 strix or 620 dollar msi gtx 1080 gaming x (both without tax)

Hi my friend is giving me one or the other for the above price. I need advice which is a better buy.

The gtx 1070 boosts up to 2120 stable and stays there at games. The 1080 only goes up 2050 mhz however.

(Basically golden chip 1070. average 1080)

Thats without tax though. When taxed its probably goes up to 460. And i live in califonria soo no newegg and amazon tax free lol

Unless you are in a big hurry to buy, keep checking Newegg for promo discounts and for GPUs with mail-in rebates to save yourself some cash. Check jet.com to see what all GTX 1070s and 1080s they have for sale as well. Unless you are in a hurry, wait it out to see what kind of deals will be available soon on a NEW GPU. Those prices your friend is asking for for those GPUs seem a little too high to me.

A GTX 1070 is a very capable GPU. If you will be gaming at a resolution beyond 1440P, then go with the GTX 1080, otherwise, that 1070 is a beast for 1080P to 1440P resolution gaming.

If you plan on playing games with resolution 2560x1440p get gtx 1070, if you plan on playing games above 2560x1440 or 3440x1440 get gtx 1080

For a majority of those games, a think a GTX 1080 would be wiser, if you wish to guarantee a CONSISTENT and SMOOTH 60 FPS with most/all the eye candy turned up.
