I have the Samsung SSD 950 Pro inserted in the M.2 slot of my Gigabyte Z97 motherboard.
I've installed the Samsung NVMe controller. The Samsung Magician Performance gives me only 833 Mb/sec.
I should be getting 3 times that speed. What else do I need to do?

I suspect the M.2 supports only upto PCIe 4x 2.0. You need PCI 4x 3.0 to reach the max speeds of 950 Pro. I am not sure what you can do other than trying to find a Z97 motherboard that supports PCI 3.0 M.2
I think you could search for an Ultra M.2 adapter that plugs into a PCI 3.0 slot You probably have a second PCI-E 16x slot. It is possible the GPU will run at 8x that way depending on the motherboard.

Also a lot of boards out there that only do PCIe 1x @ 3.0, which is roughly the bandwidth you are getting.

You might also check on your configuration, some ports on the board will share bandwidth with the M.2 slot. Might just need to move your other drives around (if any)

Unless you are doing some heavy work the real performance boost from SSDs is all about their random I/O and you won't notice a real world difference between a SATA SSD and an NVMe drive for everyday tasks and gaming.

The specs of the Gigabyte z97-gaming 3 state that:it supports

"M.2 for SSDs drives with up to 10 Gb/s data transfer".

So shouldn't that allow my 950 get near that speed?
