So I have a GTX 1080 FTW DT. Pretty much a founder's card with an ACX 3.0 cooler for those unfamiliar. The rumors are that a GTX 1080 Ti is on the horizon. I was going to jump for another 1080, but with the Ti variant coming out soon, I am starting to wonder. In your opinion, which would be better? 1080 DT SLI, or a single 1080 Ti?

I know that a single card should always come before an SLI configuration if possible. I also know the actual card isn't here yet. Just some speculation.

Well SLI is at a cross roads no question. I find games that don't support SLI don't tend to need that much horse power to run max settings, filtering and AA (save a few games). Games that do need more horsepower then one card can provide do tend to support SLI. But this is not unversal and more game engines being released do not support SLI in it's current form. For now I do believe it is worth it if you don't mind the short comings of SLI. The rumor mill also has been churning out new bits of info saying both Nvidia and AMD are both working on ways around the game engines that don't support SLI/CF because of frame buffer/rendering needing access to the previous frame which SLI do not allow for now since the other gpu has the...

I have two GTX 1080s in SLI, both overclocked (1793mhz base 1993mhz boost 2050mhz max) and very stable. Assuming SLI is supported 2 GTX 1080s run quite well. I game at 4K so they scale fairly well too. Anything below 2K the scaling is poor...heck even at 2K the scaling isn't super but its not bad either. At 1080P though you only get another 25% or so from another GTX 1080 whereas 4K I usually get 70-80% scaling...2k more like 50-70% frame rate increase. I tried waiting for the GTX 1080Ti myself but gaming at 4K with two GTX 980s left a lot of games being rendered at 2K to be playable. I hope that helps.

As long as i run Vsync (either 60hz or 50hz) I have no issues with stuttering. If I do not run it, stuttering become very noticeable. I am very over the top myself when it comes to PC gaming so I feel you. I still run two GTX 980's in SLI for 1080P on my wifes rig.

I believe volta is supposed to launch pooled memory which would allow both cards access to the previous cards frame bypassing the technical limitation SLI has now. Regardless GTX 1000 series cards do not have this support yet but I do believe it will be fixed in the next gen cards.

@PCMAN

Yeah I run 2 GTX 1080s as well and those scaling ratios sound similar (58%-62%) to what I am seeing though I am guessing your at either 1440P Maybe 1080P. I am at 4K so my numbers while not as high do as stated have similar scaling, though I believe my scaling is a hair better then urs (70%-80%...90% if I am lucky). If you are at on of the lower resolutions though that would make since as the CPU begins to bottleneck you. SLI tends to scale better at higher resolutions. It always has.

On division the game i play most i get 60-83 fps with one gtx 1080 with everything maxed out in 3d settings and in game settings at 2k 144hz on my acer gaming monitor. With sli and my 2nd card enabled same 3d settings i only get 85-123 fps depending on place on map generally on average its probably around 93- 100. sli mind you only works with dx11 on division only works with sli mode not dx 12. in dx 12 i get 57-71 with sli enabled and 62 fps steady with vsync enabled.for some reason division runs better with fps capped at 120 and vsync enabled in game and in 3d settings i enabled adaptive sync which also makes it run smoother as i have an adaptive sync monitor and use a dp cable. in 3d mark firestrike i get 40k graphics score in sli. but it always says i have gsync enabled for some reason which lowers performance. Black ops 3 i get sometimes over 200 fps sli max 3d settings. witcher 3 sli i get around 60-75 max 3d settings. whats weird in 4k 60 hz it really doesnt drop much on my samsung ju7000 series tv. it usually runs great in all games. i do get some stutter and crashing/freezing/stutter in sli sometimes in division momentarily at 2k 144hz.
im running:
asus z170 pro gaming board
i7 6700(xmp profile blck 102.5 3479 mhz) with evo 212 cpu cooler
16 gb ddr4 3200 clocked at 3007 mhz in xmp profile(max my board will allow stable with blck 102.5)
seagate 8gb 1tb sshb hd
evga gold g2 1000w psu
acer xg270hu 2k 144hz gaming monitor
logitech g602 laser wireless gaming mouse
logitech k800 backlit wireless keyboard
razer death adder wired laser gaming mouse
xbox 360 wireless windows pc remote
xbox one wired remote
asus 24x dvd writer
diypc gaming tower with 3 120 mm fans ice blue
2 nvidia gtx 1080 founders edition video cards
sli high bandwidth hard bridge from nvidia

wish i would have just waited for gtx 1080 ti and used a cheap rx 480 in meantime instead of this sli.
Sometimes i love it sometimes its aggrivating.
hit or miss to me.
when it works it sure is fun though.
id get the 1080 ti and sell your gtx 1080 like im planning before the price drops way too low for any type of return on investment. microcenter already has gtx 1080 going for 469.99 after rebate and 499.99 regular price.
used on ebay only ones i see any bidding on founders cards are from 300-430$ and remember ebay gets 10% if you sell it. so if you sell 2 cards you can get a gtx 1080 ti.
if you sell one card you still need another 350 almost after tax to get 1080 ti.
you still would need 500$ to get 2nd card to match or more depending on if its not founders or not and its an aftermarket overclocked.
so those are your variables in your decision.

1080p and DSR 4K no overclocking
However I dId put the power at 120 % and voltage to Max
Hard games hit 1987 2035
I'd like going two cards to hopefully stay over a hundred frames maxed out 1080p
I would just added a second card and call it a day for all 1080s single users thinking of ti.

Now if a titan 2 gpu in 1 comes nextI I be shocked

Dont think sli is dead read alot on DX 12 they will take advantage of it down the line in games next round few dx12 games making 2 gpu work as one
