I built my first PC more than a year ago with the following components:
CPU: AMD FX 6300
Motherboard: MSI 970 Gaming motherboard
GPU: MSI GTX 960
PSU: Corsair VS550
Case: Corsair Carbide SPEC 03
A few months ago, my PC stopped booting with one attempt. It would take repeated power button presses to turn on. The delay gradually progressed and soon my PC stopped booting completely. I took out the PSU and shorted the green and black wires and it started up just fine. I read on here that this is not necessarily indicative of a functional PSU; however, I cannot check the outputs individually because I do not have a multimeter. Next, I assembled the components outside the case and shorted the on pins and this turned on both the CPU and GPU fans. However, there was no video output on my monitor. I borrowed a GPU from a friend (it used to give him trouble occasionally) and tried it. Again, no video output. I realize that this seems shoddy but I don't have any other friends with a custom built rig or GPUs lying around.
I have come to the tentative conclusion that my motherboard is dead.
Since there are no MSI service centers near me, I just ordered a new MSI 970A-G43 motherboard and it'll be here in a few days. However, I am a bit concerned whether I made a mistake since I am not sure it's the motherboard. If it's the PSU, is there any chance that it'll ruin the new mobo? Also what are the chances of it being the GPU?
