What should I replace/upgrade first in my old PC?

Hello,

I am looking into buying my first gaming rig but I wanted to use my old/current PC for some various stuff. But I wanted to replace some (pretty much all) of the components in it after I build the new one. And I needed to know what order should I replace the parts? I wanted to use my old/current PC for mainly programming and if I can get it to work, maybe do some Minecraft modding. It pretty much has nothing good inside of it and it has no graphics card. I will for sure replace it's hdd and add an ssd inside. Any info and tips are appreciated.

Solution

Good question. My rig right now has a a SSD that is 256 GB. I use this for windows...

Well I'm spending around $2000 on a new gaming rig. I don't want to spend too much on the old one. I think it has an i5 cpu. Don't know much about the rest.

I meant budget for the upgrade of the old computer, and you may have some salvageable parts in it that could still be used, for example an I5(even an old one) is plenty strong for programming and Minecraft modding.

For security and Identity theft reasons, you should reconsider using the old HDD, if only as a storage drive. Again, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. I'm using a 7-year old laptop to write this, and if I were programming, I could probably still use it for that.

$3-400 could go a longer way if you could salvage some of your old parts

Yes I agree, he can use the SSD for the OS and use the HDD for extra storage.

Why would I want an hdd for storage? They are so slow.

Good question. My rig right now has a a SSD that is 256 GB. I use this for windows 10. I also have a 2 TB HDD. I use this for games, my movies, songs, pictures etc. HDD is not that slow nor obsolete

I like this article by howtogeek: http://www.howtogeek.com/218848/upgrading-to-an-ssd-is-a-great-idea-but-spinning-hard-drives-are-still-better-for-storing-data-for-now/

Why wouldn't you want all the storage you can have? It may be slow, but it is a heck of a lot faster than not having a drive at all. Look you asked for opinions. Yet you always seem to have a reason to not take the advice. Feel free to buy whatever you want, and do whatever you want with your old system. At this point I couldn't care less.:pfff:

Well said. Once again, I certainly agree.
