Should I get an i5 6600k or an i7 6700k for gaming. Not really planning to get a new cpu after this purchase for a long time

Solution
Most games can use only 2-3 threads so a i5-6600K with an overclock will perform about the same as a i7-6700K with an overclock.
But...
How important is the $100 price difference to you?
If you have the choice, buy the i7-6700K or you will forever wonder if you should have.
The 6700k doesn't really have a significant advantage unless you have an app that benefits from Hyperthreading. For gaming, the most significant advantage outta the bo9x is that it is clocked higher to make it more attractive, tho since both can be overclocked, this advantage will usually disappear. If it's not a budget breaker, Id say get the 670k... if it means that getting the 6700k means losing the SSD or dropping from a 1070 to a 1060, no way.

Exactly, if you can ''comfortably'' afford an i7-6700k, meaning you don't have to cheap out on other parts, definitely do get the i7-6700k.

Make sure to inform yourself about AMD Ryzen and their soon-to-arrive processors, they might have solid alternatives to Intel's i7's.

I agree with you on that last point, but with DX12's release and other advancements, hyperthreading is becoming more widely used, so if an i7 can be afforded, it will be a much better purchase over an i5 considering he doesn't plan to upgrade for a long time.

there is not much of a difference in fps for gamining between the i5 and i7 skylake. If your just going to be gaming, or even streaming a little the i5 is more then fine. I have the i5 6500 and im able to stream and game at the same time with no issues at all. I dont even have the 6600k.
