Installed rider, Deepcool Captain 360ex CPU cooler. Updated to current MSI Command Center.

System now crashes while playing games. Thoughts?

Solution
Might want to check your CPU temperatures, the new cooler might not be mounted properly causing overheating. Could also be a bad PCI-E riser. Your case does allow for installing your GPU without a riser and that is what I'd advise you to do, PCI-E risers can be a bit flaky and might not be worth the potential trouble if you don't absolutely have to use one due to case size restrictions. Since you have an aftermarket card that isn't an exhaust blower design, mounting your GPU vertically can actually be suboptimal for cooling as you have hot air blowing directly on the side panel of the case and back to your GPU.

Thanks for the response Super. The temps are fine. Overclocked to 4.7 and running idle temps of 23-30C. My card has 3x intake fans and blows out the rear. Im going to try to remove the riser and use that, getting a new riser if that's the case. I have seen a lot of people have success with the EZDIY riser over the others out there. If anyone has a different recommendation for riser, let me know please.

Now it's crashing while sitting at login to Windows. I'm going to let it sit at the bios for a while first to see if it is CPU temp causing the BSOD and restarts. More to come soon!

I've been running this prior to changing to this cooler without any issues up to 4.9. The temps are better now. Still could be inconsistency? I had a CoolerMadter Hyper Evo 212 single fan on it previously and it ran a tad hotter than this.

It has BSODed at the login page after 30 seconds but I have left it in the BIOS while over clocked for over a half hour without issue.

The BIOS isn't exactly a CPU stress test as it isn't doing much of anything. If you're getting crashes at the Windows login screen or before that, then something is wrong with the overclock or some other piece of hardware. 4.7GHz and up is where stability starts to become uncommom without pumping lots of voltage into the chip, most 6700ks are likely to top out at around 4.6GHz when they run into stability issues without going up to unsafe voltages.

But with a solid history of this chip and board being 100% stable prior to installing the new cooler, that it could happen? That's more of my question. I'm going to try lowering it, don't get me wrong, but just wanted your thoughts on that.

CPUs can degrade over time, especially when overclocked high due to electron migraton. This leads to your overclock becoming unstable unless put more voltage into it. This process usually takes time though so if you haven't had your CPU overclocked for long that might not be the case. It could also be the CPU is overheating as you're only really seeing idle temperatures rather than the full load temps. You may want to try remounting your new CPU cooler.

Ok. I've had this CPU for only a few weeks and have kept it 4.5-4.7 without error. My next steps (as I can entertain while spending some time with my toddler lol) will be:

Return factory clock settings to CPU.
Return OC settings and remove Riser cable.
Return CPU factory clock settings to VPU without riser.
Remount CPU cooler (using Arctic silver 5) and work my settings/riser up if this worked.

Update. Removed the PCIe riser and having some mixed results. I started up the comp, it wanted to repair. Did that. Loaded into my profile and everything I try to start doesn't. It all loads about 3 minutes later and is popping like usual. Loaded Watch Dogs 2 on Ultra, game loads and plays at 50 FPS for about 30 seconds. BSOD. restarted a few times, now I can't hardly get anything to load, and if it does, it freezes. CPU temps are good, Gfx cards temp is good. It's not even loading Chrome!

My desktop now has a busy icon for the mouse but I can operate GPUTweak and my start bar fine. After about 15 min, it BSODs (pic provided) and restarts. Launched watch dogs 2 again and BSOD last picture.

Do you think it's attempts on restarts have done something to Windows or is something up with my CPU?

Doing the Windows repair might have messed things up. Some of the newer Nvidia graphics drivers have been known to cause problems, so you may want to try one of the older 374 drivers. You may want to look at reinstalling Windows to rule out any software issues if going back to an earlier Nvidia driver revision doesn't help. If the problem persists after all that, you have a hardware issue of some sort.

Greatttt. I do have the Intel PTPP warranty. Didn't think I would have to possibly redeem it that quickly. I'll see if I can find my installer again and let you know. Super and the rest, thanks for the help so far!

Something could have been knocked loose when installing the cooler, overtightening the bolts on the cooler might also have bent the CPU or the pins in the socket, though if you didn't notice anything wrong when you reapplied the thermal paste you can rule that out. ESD to the motherboard might cause issues. It's hard to say.

Thanks. I know this cooler is pretty tight but nothing past hand tightening on the brackets or back plate. I've checked under the CPU and all looks well and it seems straight. I am reinstalling Windows 10 Pro currently.

Good News. I have reinstalled windows, started installing drivers and programs. Everything is working very snapy. I don't have all my drivers installed yet, but this feels like a great win so far. I'll have to continue this tomorrow. Gnight and thanks!

All drivers reinstalled. Everything is now good to go! I am idle at 20-25C on CPU and ran Watch Dogs 2 for an hour with my GFX card back on my OC settings without any hiccups or difference in performance than before.

So. Would this be attributed to the riser cable or to the installation of Windows 10? Or the influences the riser cable had on Windows 10?

Thanks. I think I may create a backup image of my computer to make a restore a lot quicker :)
I appreciate your help Super and to others.

I'll do a quick shutdown and restart with it, check to see if it will handle a game under load and not BSOD on me. I'll update you later today.

Arrgghhh. I am still getting some BSODs. I haven't reinstalled the riser. Only system changes I have made was installing NZXT CAM+, Webroot, CPU-Z MSI Edition, etc. They aren't happening like they used to when I started this thread, but have done this while running Squad (which is in Alpha, so I wasn't too concerned) and just did it while playing WoW.

Thanks. I saw it pointed at DX so I figured it was GFX. I need to learn to read this stuff some day haha! Hard with a toddler running around :)

I'll see if I can find that driver. I do recall updating the driver before I moved the case at some point after my initial build.
