after clearing the cmos after a crash my RAM sometimes does not show the full amount during POST. I have 16gb but sometimes only 8gb or even 12gb (11.8 usable) is shown in my windows system properties, but it always goes back to 16gb after i restart the computer. I thought maybe it was just a glitch. Recently it did that again but this time it stayed. It shows 16gb (15.4gb usable). I know its a small amount and may not be a big deal but still its bugging the hell outta me lol. Im trying to figure out what is causing or using it or could it be a malfunction that i did from clearing the cmos. thats my question.
Could clearing the CMOS short out the RAM in some way?

I think it's not the CMOS, but the crash that could even do something like this. Have you overclocked anything at all in that PC?
You can try reinstalling the modules, but that wouldn't really help, because you say they get recognized after a restart.
To be honest, I have no idea.

I used to have a motherboard that didn't start up if there were DIMMs installed in the two slots that were connected to channelA of the memory controller. But only after it's been running fine for two months. Then when I put both DIMMs on the same channel, it worked fine again for as long as I wanted, but if I left it like that for half a year, it worked in dual channel again for a few months, but after that it refused to boot up and I had to use it in single channel for a while. So, there are things that don't make sense at all, and are completely illogical and better to be left unsolved.

I do overclock but not that high up since im not too familiar with overclocking that much and im doing it manually. See i recently replaced my motherboard and i used the UEFI autoclock setting of my last motherboard but this new one wont work after it uses the autoclock feature for some reason. After it overclocks it will restart and give me no image on screen, not even POST. Thats when i started clearing CMOS over and over because i tried to figure out why it wont work after using the autoclock feature so i was trying different settings. Now each time i cleared the CMOS, the RAM amount shown on POST and inside windows changed but the number it changed to was always an amount of one or two RAM sticks less, like it will show 12gb or 8gb instead of 16 (i have 4x4gb sticks). This latest one is missing .6gb  and its been like that for a few months now, just 15.4 usable, which actually is my real problem. I just wanna get that .6 back so i've trying to figure it out. Anyway, i appreciate your response

Does you MB have integrated graphics by any chance? Because that could reserve a portion of the system memory for itself.
Also, I know it's bugging you, but in reality, you'd never actually gain any benefit from utilizing that 0.6GB.
