Hello all,
First of all, merry christmas and thanks for reading, im a long time reader, first time poster.
So, basically, I have an Alienware M17xR4, the AMD HD7970m edition and out of nowhere recieved screen distortion and subsiquently a crash of a blue, striped screen. I was not doing anything strenuous, nor for a prolonged amount of time, approx. half an hour on Rimworld.
Upon restarting, I recieved a BSOD after BIOS with the VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE with the relevant driver being atikmpag.sys.
I ran the Alienware BIOS hardware test (naturally) and it reported that the hardware, including the GPU was fine.
After attempting to launch my OS in safe mode and uninstalling the driver and reinstalling from different sources, (tried automatic Windows 10, AMD, Intel, Dell and 3rd party driver installers such as Driver Agent and DriverPack, also tried the cmd expansion method) but to no avail, I resorted to a clean install of Windows 10. This did not solve the issue.
I have gathered that the BSOD occurs the moment a driver is installed and crashes through installation.
Some drivers will just outright not install.
At the moment the laptop is un-usable, unless it is in safe-mode.
It seemingly is not a hardware issue because it works fine until the new drivers are installed and I am currently trying a Windows 8.1 Catalyst Control Centre package from 2013.
This issue begun following a windows update, around a week ago.
If anyone could throw their two cents in, that would be great, but honestly I am hoping it is not a hardware issue, because I bought it only 3 months ago.
Again, thank you for your time and patience.
Toby
