I just got a new ASrock Z170 Pro4S motherboard and installed it today. The mobo has an onboard video chipset, according to the specs. I also have an R9 380 GPU installed. Right now, I have the power supply plugged into the GPU as well as into the PCIe socket in the mobo, which I am assuming powers the onboard chipset. Should I just have power going to the GPU, or is both ideal?

I did read the manual. I didn't plug the wrong cable into the wrong socket. The computer works fine.

My actual question was whether or not it is redundant to have the power supply plugged into the PCI port even when I have a GPU with its own power supply socket. Any advice on the actual topic of the thread is appreciated.

the onbard receive power from board sytem so if you have a pci-e gpu it need to be on the board and receive power from psu also some board disable the internal when you had a gpu in the pci-e slot that is all on your mobo user manual .

Any extra cable(s) attached to the GFX card is called a supplementary power cable. The slot itself supplies the GFX card with up to 75W. This is the reason behind the 1050Ti's lack of 6 or 8 pin connectors. There may have been some aftermarket changes which necessitates it on a model or 3 but regular 1050Ti GFX cards use up to 75W. The slot powers the card just fine. You don't say which R9 380 you have so we will use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127878 as an example. That card needs up to 190W of power. It gets 75W from the slot. Each 6pin supplementary power cable supplies up to an additional 75W each. This means your card has access to up to 225W.There are cards which use 8pin supplementary power cable(s). The 8pin supplies up to an additional 150W each. Nothing redundant.
