alienware aurora r3
intel i7 960 3.2ghz
6gb 1066mhz ddr3
amd hd 6950 2gb gpu
Seagate 1tb 7200 rpm hdd

I just purchased an 8gb ram upgrade for my alienware aurora r3. I looked up the dell replacement ram and bought an 8gb(2x4) upgrade for my r3 that currently has 6gb. My motherboard appears to have 6 slots for ram but everywhere I read it seems that most people with r3's are only having 4 slots.

The slots are 3 black and 3 tan slots that alternate. it reads dimm2dimm1dimm4dimm3dimm6dimm5 on my mobo. Does this mean I have 6 total or just the ability to switch over between running the sets of 3. Since my current setup is 2x2x2 does that mean I will only be able to upgrade only to 10gb or could I add the 8gb to the 6gb and have a total of 14gb??

Please advise.

So, I have received and installed the ram.

When I use SIW to look at my system hardware it shows correctly that I added 2 sticks of 4gb Samsung 1033mhz. So this software recognizes the hardware but my system gauges on my desktop read that I am using 50% of my ram.

When I bring up the task manager and go to performance it also shows 50% usage there as well. Elsewhere on this tab it reads available 1gb ram and total as 2gb ram, so that's where the 50% is coming from.

Prior to installation of the additional 2x4gb stick my systems ram usage usually hovered at around 38-45% after bootup and some programs starting so now for some reasons only 2gb of the 14 installed is being found.

I will gladly pick a solution as soon as I install and find they work properly. Unfortunately because of the holiday season the package of ram has been delayed so I will know in about 2 days time. I am not doubtful, just want to be 100%sure before I mark an answer.
