This is for my son's PC, mostly used for Minecraft Technic Launcher

Here is the current computer configuration:

  • MB - ASUS M2N-E AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
    CPU - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz AM2 65W Dual-Core Black Ed ADO5000DSWOF
    MEM - Patriot Signature Line 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 PC2 6400 Memory Module Kit PSD24G800K
    VIDEO - Sapphire HD6450 PCI Express 1 GB DDR3
    PS - Thermaltake TR2 W0070 430W ATX12V v2.3 Power Supply
    OS - Windows 10
Would there be a noticeable difference if I upgrade the CPU to the Athlon 64X2 6400+ 3.2GHz and worth the $70-85 upgrade?

Or bite the bullet and save for a Intel Core i5-6500/ASRock H110M-HDS/Avexir Core Series 8GB DDR4 (~<$300)

Thank you!

I see 3 issues here.
1. CPU 2.6ghz Daul Core itself is sluggish under Windows.
2. 4 GB of Ram
3. HD6450

All three of these will Choke out Minecraft under heavy mod packs, replacing the GPU and upping the RAM would be most efficient as there really inst much in terms of CPU upgrades available for the Motherboard.

Video Card: Zotac GeForce GT 730 2GB Video Card ($55.98 @ Newegg)

The best route is to just upgrade to more current parts, this would play Minecraft and other games very well.

CPU: Intel Pentium G4400 3.3GHz...

Some of the modpacks run really sluggish and unplayable (<10 FPS), so I was thinking of upgrading his PC.

I think its a total waste of money to put $80 into an obsolute cpu (and obsolete system) to gain very little in terms of performance. If you could find a used version of that cpu for 10-20 then it would be more reasonable.

Save for the intel system.

Yeah you would be better served saving for an Intel solution, or even possibly AMD once Ryzen launches next year. If the rumors are to be believed it will be on par with Intel for a fraction of the cost, of course I would wait for launch reviews but things do look hopeful. If AMD delivers you may well be able to get an 4c/8t part for the price of an i3 or a 8c/16t part for the price of an i5.
