So I bought a 1060 and a EVGA 500w PSU and to my surprise (Sarcasm) my Intel core 8200 is bottle-necking it. So I am pretty much buying a new computer and I am looking at the i5 6600K I have enough for it, though is it really necessary? I don't want it to be overkill if it won't make a difference. Like I'd like to save money if possible but if that's the best I can get I'll do it!

Side-note: Don't worry, I am getting a different motherboard and ram. I know how cpu sockets and such work.

You don't necessarily need to overclock it, it's just an extra to that CPU.
The base clock of the 6600K is higher than the 6600 and the single core speed of it ( which is more important in games ) is faster than the i7 6700.
So IMO it's a good choice, and if you ever wish to overclock it to make it even faster, you will be able to with just a switch on the mobo.

The Skylakes's i5s are great for gaming and offer the best performance/price in those aspects.

The i7 are overkill, and much more recommended for video or image rendering softwares that will benefir greatly for it's hyperthreading. ( Which games doesn't )

Therefore, the best i5 you can get is the 6600K, it has a very nice single core performance, ( which is the most relevant aspect when gaming ). It will be handle almost any game easily, except for BF1 which is terribly optimized for CPUs.

So, IMO the 6600K is the best CPU for gaming, going beyond that for that purpose alone would be overkill.

Just to note that, with the 6600K you will have to get a proper after-market cooler and a Z170 mobo if you wish to overclock it ( You don't need to tho. The base clock for the 6600K is still great ). If you wanna save some bucks, you can get the 6600, should suffice as well in almost any game you put if against.

But, as AMD Ryzen is at out door, if you can you might wait up a bit to see if you can increase even further the performance/price ratio.

Okay, here's something then, would the 6600K be worth the extra $20 over the 6600? I have never overclocked before and I'm not sure if I'd want to.
