How to tell if my packet loss and high ping is a result of my router or a poor ethernet cable?

So when I connect my pc directly to my modem via an ethernet cable, I get no lag and ping spikes. However, when I connect through my router, my ping would skyrocket and would occasionally get packet loss as high as 18%. My router is DLink DIR 615. Is it because this router is extremely outdated, or because my ethernet cable is broken?

Not sure if it matters, but here are pictures as far as setup is concerned. http://imgur.com/a/re7jf

If you use same Ethernet cable for direct connection to the modem, and the router, definitely the cable is not an issue.
DIR-615 router is quite old already (by design, I mean, I don't know how long you have your unit), especially if you have fast internet connection. Try borrowing a router from a friend before buying a new one.

I think the cable used to connect directly to the modem is different than when connecting to the router. Also do you have any other ideas to see if the router really is the problem? And if it is, can you recommend a router than wont break the bank? Thanks.
