Ram Timings ?

So i recently settled for TridentZ 32GB kit 3200Mhz, My question is regarding timings. As far as I am aware the timings are superior to competitors. But how much does that matter?

How big would the performance difference be between

32GB 3200Mhz - 16-18-18-38

32GB 3200Mhz - 14-14-14-34

(bearing in mind that I do a lot of 3D and video editing and rendering and play Arma 3 primarily)

Well in terms of actual timings, those RAM sticks would work out with the following latency speeds.
32GB 3200Mhz - 16-18-18-38 = 10 Nanoseconds
vs
32GB 3200Mhz - 14-14-14-34 = 8.75 Nanoseconds

Now if you're doing a lot of long rendering sessions, that may add up to a bit of saved time. But if you're not doing it on a pro level or not doing long enough renders for the 1.25NS difference to show itself, then just go with whats cheaper and easier to use.

The difference is quite minimal and not worth it in my opinion. Both those RAMs run at a high Megahertz, which is the main thing. 16 to 14 timing is the most important number for example is a 12.5% improvement in speed but only for that specific timing while the other 2 are worse than 12.5% improvement. To put this into perspective, if you go from 1600Mhz to 2400Mhz in general you don't get a proportional increase in performance. Even in ARMA3 which is quite memory bandwidth bound you will have minimal improvement over the already fast DDR4 3200Mhz setup. I doubt you will get more than 1-2% improvement if that. In graphics design where you copy stuff a lot in memory you will still never see the 12.5% full improvement as other factors also come into play and memory is not the only bottleneck.

The rule of thumb for RAM for me is: If you can get performance RAM for cheap do it. If it's significantly more then don't. Rather spend the money on a better graphics card or CPU.

There are other discussions that are perhaps good to browse through also:

Thanks for the fast reply, And the fact that you noted Arma as a memory bandwidth intensive game drastically ups the credibility of the reply (at least in my eyes). Is there any new ram technology or faster ram coming on the horizon that I should consider at all before making a purchase?

Ah, I see. So nothing really significant then. Putting this into reality. If i were do render a 10 minute long 4k video. What performance increase might I see from one to the other?
