Hi All

I am having a few issues with my motherboard, and its a bit of a strange one but hope you guys can help

My Setup:
CPU: 4770k i7 3.5ghz
Mobo: MSI Z87-GD65
RAM: Corsair Vengence 2133mhz
Cooler: Corsair H105

Issue:
My PC doesn't boot to the BIOS and hangs on the pre-BIOS initiation phases.
On the LED panel I see debug error 26 which i have been told is a memory initialisation issue, though I'm not sure if this is true due to the intermittent issue
Now sometimes it does go to BIOS screen and boots up fine, but sometimes it doesnt
Seems to be random. sometimes I take my USB peripherals out and it loads up, sometimes I dont have to do anything and it loads (or doesn't load)

Things Ive Tried
Replaced motherboard to this one (my previous one also had the same issue - MSI Z87 MPOWER SP) this didn't work
Tried different RAM - this didnt work
Moving RAM around the different DIMM slots - this didnt work
Reset CMOS (a whole bunch of times to get it working the first time, admittedly havent had to do this for a few tries now as removing USBs and resetting seems to sometimes work) :??:
I am not using any OC settings and everything running on default - tho cant see why this would make any difference the initiation stage?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Solution
I managed to solve this

I bought new RAM and then took the battery out to reset the CMOS overnight, I then put the new RAM in and but the battery back in, started the PC and it worked!

My first indication of the issue was that in the BIOS it wasnt showing the right RAM speed (showed as 1333 rather than 2333) when I did manage to get in before which took a while, which indicated a RAM issue

Thank you everyone for your help! :D
well you replaced the motherboard and same results ?? maybe a bad stick of memory ? try just one stick in one slot test it move to another slot test it and so on do 2edstick the same and so on in till you tried all your sticks single in all slots then do 2 sticks ect........ but new memory = same ?

if your sure its not the memory then you say removing usb devices works ?? could be a bad usb device or usb controller / chipset or hub ??

in the end could be anything right down to your cpu may of went bad ..

seeing how you say twice about the usb thing that maybe where to look now

you know looking at this table here error 26 don't fit any of the categories listed

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/680495/Msi-Z87-Gd65-Gaming.html?page=52

maybe ''Early South Bridge Initialization'' [19~1C,3B~3E] that could be where that usb runs through ??

seeing you got a new board I'd look at a usb device your unplugging being at fault

se from there chart thing usb is part of that ??

Hi

Thank for your quick reply, its much appreciated

I tried moving the memory round and new ram (this was on my old board, not this current board - I could try it on my new board and see how it goes)
Also might try buying some new RAM for this PC - although I would have thought a RAM problem would mean it would never get passed initialisation - but it actually gets to windows 10 sometimes

Weird thing is I do get to windows 10 sometimes - does this mean that the RAM is OK? I would have thought if the RAM was faulty it would never get to even the BIOS?

Strange with the USB, I only take out the USB for Keyboard and Mouse - I just had the problem just now after I shut the PC down, it got stuck on 26 a few times. I took the USB out completely..didnt work, I put the USB back in...still was stuck, i then put the USB in another USB slot and it worked, so very intermittent - any ideas?

Also if it were the CPU, I assume it would also not get to windows at all, but sometimes it does and sometimes it doenst

Could it be anything else? Im thinking its something simple if sometimes it goes to windows and sometimes it doesnt?

windows10 ?? [or as I call it that malware called windows 10 ] sorry your on your own .. that OS does as Microsoft wants not as you want as it use to be it maybe just rejecting your keyboard or mouse ?? it does sound like one of them may of developed a issue ? try a cheap Microsoft keyboard and mouse like from wal mart to see [make sure its got that win 10 sticker on it ]

they got circuit boards in them and can just get buggy and cause these thing s

''Lots of experimentation led me to this:
1.USB 3.0 hardware/software in my machine was unable to start. Don't know why. Driver supposedly OK.
2.Plugging my USB - PS2 Keyboard - Mouse adapter in somehow screwed things up.
3.Plugging into successive ports eventually led to a combination that allowed the machine to come up.
4.The machine would NOT come up with the device unplugged. I had to find the "right" USB port.
5.The "right" USB port seemed to switch around. Was never clear which one was "the one" to allow the machine to come up on a restart.

Hi

Many thanks, i am begging to think that it has nothing to do with the USBs at all, I took them all out and did a number of combos but it still has error 26 debug error

I have ordered some new RAM arriving tomorrow which I will try on this board, and have taken the battery out of the mobo to reset the CMOS, when the new RAM arrives tomorrow I will try again and see what happens, will also try and flash the bios updating to the latest version and see if that makes a difference, I think it might be the BIOS doing strange things to my settings and the RAM making it not iniatlise correctly - might be worth a try

If this doesnt work then I am going to have to assume that the CPU is faulty as there is nothing else I can really change - will then look to upgrade as my rig is ~2/3yrs old so no point trying to update outdated components

I will report back on my findings tomorrow
