XP SP3. Odd characters are all over the screen during boot. Windows freezes at the logo.
I can enter Safe mode w/o problem (no odd characters).
I've tried followings but none of them works:

In Safe mode, do system restore;
In BIOS setting, restore the previous status;
Reset BIOS to default;
Took out battery on motherboard to reset BIOS.

Is this virus, O/S or hardware? Thanks.

probably hardware related, something is printing to screen memory that shouldn't be...(although this can be software, but i doubt it if its happening in the bios as well...

see this youtube video for an example of a program writing to screen memory when it shouldn't, very similar. altough your issue is hardware not software but the same thing essentially.
