Laptop stolen, how can I use backup from the old machine to recover files etc and place them on new laptop. Both machines are win 10 pro

Solution
Hey there again, @ChienLunatic!

I believe that this MS article will shed some light on how to restore the backup onto your new laptop.
In the future, keep up the good work with regular backups of your most important files. Keeping duplicates of the data will avoid the potential headaches of data loss.

Hope this helps you! :) Good luck!

Couple basic questions, hope you don't mind.

How was the backup performed-what software, what type of backup (full, ?) and what type of media is the backup on.
Have you tried to view/read the backup with the new machine

Hey there, @ChienLunatic!

I'd totally agree with @t53186 regarding you sharing more information about what kind of files you wish the backup to include. Since both machines are Windows 10-based, you can use the Windows built-in Backup utility to copy the files onto an external HDD and then transfer them onto your newly acquired laptop. If the files are going to be simply media files from different folders/location on your old computer, you can also just copy/paste them onto the external HDD and then to the laptop. You have multiple backup solutions & software you could as well.

Let us know if you have additional questions & good luck!

Greetings
Thanks for your replies.
The stolen laptop was backed up to an external HHD.
Using Win10 backup utility - I think it was all files - it is my wife's computer, so I am not totally sure.
The new laptop will hopefully arrive before Christmas, so I haven't tried anything yet. I just want to be totally sure I don't mess-up a new machine (Dell Precision).
The most important thing for her are her contacts, e-mails, documents and Photos all work related so really important.
All help appreciated.

SuperSoph pointed out the most important maintenance task - backup and backup up some more. It's our data and only we can protect it, unless of course it's in the cloud.
Back on topic. Since you were very wise to do the backup using native MS software it should be a breeze restoring. Checked out the MS article about file history, that works well, so does creating an image and backing up everything weekly.
