Where To Get Started With Retro PC Games?

Hi! For a while now I have been going to thrift stores looking for Nintendo games. I've came up short so far, but I always see old "big box" PC games. I want to get into it so I have a few questions.

1. What games should I look for?- my Favorite Genres are RPG, FPS, action, and platformer. What game should I get for those genres?

2. How Can I Play These Games?- I have Windows 10, so what can I use to play these old games?

IIRC, Good ol' Games, aka gog.com, sells many old games pre-configured to run in DOS Box. That would be the simplest way to bootstrap a retro habit.

Old games I like...hmm, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Baldur's Gate II, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Dungeon Master, Gunship 2000, Doom, etc.

Is there any way to play off the discs? I want to collect them.

gog.com is digital download only. For games on floppy/CD/DVD you'll have to visit eBay or check your local thrift store. I just found Civilization IV for $2.

Watch the floppies though. Most of the floppy based games will suffer from bit rot if the disks are from 20+ years ago.

Typically, yes, but you may have some issues. You'll probably have to run old games as Administrator (avoid installing them to Program Files), and available resolutions may be limited (esp. widescreen ones.) There are usually mods or config file hacks to get around resolution problems. Google is your friend.
