I'm looking to buy a used gpu and I'm choosing between GTX 560 and HD 6770. I plan on playing games and video editing specifically trying to play triple A games like GTA 5, Battlefield 4, etc. and Premiere pro cc 2015. I also have a core 2 duo e7400 in which I plan to overclock for the mean time and a 500w power supply. Now I know GTX 560 is the better choice but I want to choose in terms of life span and efficiency. It seems as the HD 6770 performs in lesser power than the GTX 560 so I was thinking maybe this card would survive longer but I'm still tempted to buy the GTX 560 for a better gaming experience. Advices are much appreciated.

Solution

Life span really varies, but three years only is very unlikely. Some cards can last over TEN YEARS. Electronic chips degrade over time but very slowly. The FAN will also wear out, but it depends on how heavily it was used.

Not sure of prices there but if you can find a GT750 2GB (not 1GB) or GTX750Ti within...
It would be nice to know the cost, because those are pretty low-end now and there's some NEW ones that may suit you better.

Having said that:
1) NVidia has better DX11 drivers in terms of CPU usage. You have a relatively weak CPU so should go with NVidia.

2) Lifespan and power usage aren't directly related.

3) 2GB of VRAM is the absolutely bare minimum memory I can recommend for those games.

4) Careful choosing games with that CPU. Make sure you meet the minimum spec (meeting the minimum may not be good enough for a good experience in some games though)

*Your CPU only has two cores, and both of those are roughly HALF of what a modern intel CPU can do. So that CPU is not suitable for either of the games you mentioned.

5) I'll link a couple NEW choices in case your budget can stretch that far.

My budget is about $60. I saw a used 560 for just $40 but I was anxious when I saw that a 560 usually has a life span of 3 yrs and more anxious when I realized I would settle with a used card. Then I figured maybe a used HD 6770 for $37 would survive longer so I'm deciding between the two. The money left after buying the cards would go to a new cpu probably a core 2 quad q8400/q6600. Oh and I also live in the Philippines.

$135 - GTX1050Ti 4GB

$110 - GTX1050 2GB

For USED, a GTX750Ti might make more sense, but I just checked prices and they are too expensive for what you get.

I also looked at GT730's but there are many with only 96-cuda cores.

SUMMARY:
a) if budget is high enough get a GTX1050 or 1050Ti (no VGA monitor support)

b) CPU is insufficient for many games, certainly the demanding ones. Sorry, but you need to look carefully for games that will work well with it.

Mostly OLDER games, or newer very basic games.

Sorry I don't have that much money. I'm just stuck between GTX 560 and Hd 6770 so would you mind telling me which is future proof and probably safer to be with? I saw benchmarks on youtube for both these cards with core 2 duos or core 2 quads and I saw decent results especially on GTA 5 running at normal/mid at 30-50fps on both cards but I'm still looking for the future proof one.

And again, you need at least 2GB of video memory.

(and Windows 7 or newer that is 64-bit, not 32-bit)

I think you really should not buy anything with only 2gb vram for those games. No matter how slow or fast your CPU is, 1gb vram effectively makes the games unplayable. It is true that more videocard memory does not mean more performance in most cases, but the exception is when games require a certain amount to run right. The GTX 660 and 650 Ti Boost both had 2gb variants. For AMD 6xxx series I think you'd need a 6970 at least.

I realize you have a certain budget, but it is not a good idea to spend money on something that will not perform the way you need no matter how inexpensive it is.

I've already discussed this, in fact I recommended at least 2GB twice so no point beating a dead horse.

And 500W is enough. For future reference, you can try Googling the CPU system (without dedicated GPU) then find the GPU power and add together (roughly).

You can also estimate by the TDP of the CPU (not exact power but fine for this) and add say 100W for the base system (motherboard, fans, drives but not GPU).

65WTDP + 100W base + 136W

approx. 300W

I could look for more accuracy but it's not even close enough to be concerned even with more for overclocking.
