New Monitor, 75Hz: Cheaper or 144Hz: Quality?

Hi, I am looking for a new monitor. The monitor I have right now is the Asus Asus VX228H. The specifications of this monitor says that it has a 75Hz refresh rate, but in reality it only reaches that refresh rate on the lower resolutions and not on 1920x1080. Really disappointing.

So now I am looking for a new monitor, with the minimum refresh rate of 75Hz, one that actually reaches the 75Hz on the highest resolution, instead of only reaching it only on the lower resolutions, so v-sync will be smooth and running on a solid 75fps: not allowing to drop under 60 fps easily, as it does now (especially) in Battlefield 1.

But the question is, should I buy a cheaper 75Hz monitor, with the solid 75fps with v-sync enabled, or should I spend more money to get a 144Hz monitor? What are your suggestions?

I also have a question about the following: there is an ultrawide monitor with 75Hz refresh rate but it has only a 5ms response time. Is that a disadvantage? Or will there be no difference between 1ms and 5ms response time on 75Hz-fps gaming?

Intel i5 4460.
EVGA Geforce GTX 1070 FTW
16GB Ram.
Z97S SLI Krait Edition.
1000 GB HDD.
250 EVO Samsung SSD.

Can't order those from Netherlands, need to ship them from Asia. I heard they could have quite some backlight bleed and dead pixels, not sure though.

Get the 24'' AOC 75Hz man. If you don't like it you just return it :).

Not using the 1070 for either; 1080p@144Hz or 1440p@60Hz (Or higher) will be a waste of money, so go for either of those. The extra money for 144Hz is always worth it, never used it, but I really want to as it is apparently really smooth and improves gameplay over 60Hz.

I owned a 144Hz, the difference is night and day. You'll occasionally stumble upon people who tell you there is no difference or there is maybe a slight difference, please ignore those people. 60 and 144 Hz aren't close to being comparable to each other.



No there won't be. I used a 75Hz Freesync monitor now and it works just fine and all games play without noticable input delay. It's just snappy.

Okay, so you suggest me buying a 144Hz monitor (from 1920x1080) is the best buy?
I really love the ultrawide 75Hz monitor. Just because it's way bigger (;

But the point of doubt for me is the price. Most monitors with 75Hz are just way cheaper of course. But is the difference big and will it be worth it to buy a 144Hz vs a 75Hz?

For so far: 144Hz 2-0 75Hz

IPS has far better coloring than TN usually, much better viewing angles and deeper, more natural blacks too. I used to have a 144Hz TN but didn't like the viewing angles, backlight bleed and weaker colors. Now I have 75Hz IPS and I'm happy.

Thing is, as long as you don't get used to 144Hz you won't really want it either. But It's not easy getting used to poor coloring on your display.

I hate 144Hz, not because It's worse, It's superior, but once you get used to 144Hz you won't really find any other display panel smooth anymore, because you get used to the ultra-smoothness. Plus you can't max any game anymore, you always need to balance your graphics settings for more fps.

Okay, thank you for that info man! That brought me closer to buy an IPS 75Hz monitor. But now is the question, 1ms or 5ms (the widescreen (; ). The monitor I will put next to it (the one I have right now) has 1ms response time. Will there be a difference when I put a 5ms monitor next to an 1ms monitor? And will it adjust my gameplay?

Okay thank you. My budget is around 200 euros. I live in the Netherlands. I've seen some nice monitors with 75Hz around 150 euro. The widescreen is around 170 euro.

Budget is a bit low, especially if you own a GTX 1070. I don't think 1080p@144Hz is possible.

I use the LG 24MP68VQ-P personally. It runs at 75Hz through HDMI with ''Freesync mode'' enabled. You can also enable Freesync mode with an Nvidia GPU and it will run at 75 Hz too.

No that's right. But I already said that I was more leaning towards a 75Hz monitor since you give me your advice (; . I think I will buy a 75Hz monitor with 1ms response time. Unless I really want the ultra wide screen. But what do you suggest me to do? And what about the links I send you. Are those good monitors? I especially like the AOC G2460VQ6 (unfortunately a TN screen) and the LG 25UM58-P .

25 inch is too small for a ultrawide IMO, and I don't think that panels works at 1080p@75Hz. The AOC seems good, but It's a TN panel. So you won't see the benefits of IPS.

IPS technology comes with 4/5 ms response time normally and has better/more in-depth colors and viewing angles.

TN is faster, usually with 1/2 ms response time but colors are worse and less viewing angles.

Still, maybe go for the AOC.

Okay, I have the Asus VX228H right now. I can't find the specs of what for kind of LCD screen it is. So I suppose it's just a LCD screen. If I put the AOC G2460VQ6 next to it, will the AOC look better or worse than the screen I have right now? Because it's TN..

Okay, I don't have an IPS panel, so it won't bother me if I buy another TN panel. I'm probably gonna buy a 75Hz monitor, but I am still not clear. What do you suggest me to? And 144Hz monitors become kinda blurry if they have a 5ms response time don't they? At least that's something I've heard. What should I do?! XD, Buy a 75Hz or 144Hz.

The main reason why I want to buy a new monitor is because this one has some refresh rate problems in-game. I only reach 75Hz on lower resolutions and not on 1080p. So when I turned it to a lower resolution in 75Hz, it felt really smooth. Not when I played without v-sync on full resolution. When I play on full resolution, I feel like the refresh rate is around 58 or so. So I have 100 FPS in Bf1, but it feels stuttering and I think that is because of the refresh rate being lower than 60Hz.

How can you buy 144Hz if your budget is too low for it? I want to recommend 144Hz but your budget doesn't allow more than a 75Hz. The AOC is good.

Anyways, instead of buying a new monitor try turning on ''V-Sync'' in Battlefield 1's graphics settings and see if it feels a lot smoother, it prevents the stuttering/jitter you'll see.

I know, but and it drops a lot to around 58 FPS when I have v-sync enabled. That's why I want a monitor with a minimum of 75Hz so when I enable v-sync it will lock on 75 FPS. So it won't drop under 60. And the weird part is, when I haven't enabled v-sync, I have around 70-140 FPS. But when I do it drops to 58 sometimes for no reason, while it will be around 70-140 FPS when I haven't enabled v-sync.. #logic.

Maybe you can show me the "cheaper" 144Hz monitors and maybe I will save up more money for that. But I rather just have a smooth gameplay with a 75Hz monitor than spending a lot of money for a 144Hz monitor, not reaching the 144 FPS. Due to you told me what your experience was. And I agree with you.

He means that if you drop FPS at 75 fps it might look equally bad, which is what I was thinking about too at times.

Remember that, without FreeSync/G-Sync technology, you want your FPS to be stable and consistent. If your game will drop from 75 fps to ~60-65 frequently it might still be very annoying.

Of course, but it will still be above 60. If it drops from 75 to around 73 or so, it won't be as annoying as it drops below 60. For some reason I have small fps drops from 2 fps or so. That is why I want a 75Hz monitor, for the smoother gameplay, but also v-sync will lock it on 75fps.

Remember that my fps is mostly around 75-100 when playing games. So if I don't enable v-sync, it still will be smoother due to my current monitor has refresh rate issues. I can notice when the refresh rate is lower than 60, while I've put it on 60Hz. When I switched to 75Hz, (it was on a lower resolution) it felt really smooth instead of what I am used to play with. I know it was on a lower resolution, but that won't be a big problem due to my PC.
