If I'm away from my computer for a while, I come back to a surprise screen. File explorer is up showing all my files on my Seagate Ultra slim external hard drive. I'm running Windows 10 & should be the latest update since I don't try to block updates. This is a 1 TB drive. I tried to get answer @ Seagate website but seem to get run around & they don't seem to even recognize my S/N even though I just received it 11 Oct. 2016 so not very old.

Hey there.

It's possible for this to happen if there's an issue with the cable and if you've set it to open the drive as soon as it's connected. So if it reconnects due to a faulty cable, this might be the issue. Give it a go with a different USB cable and with a different computer if possible, to see if that problem still persists.

You could also test the drive with its manufacturer's diagnostic tool, just to make sure that it's in good condition.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how it goes.

Thank you. This worked. I just wanted to wait a while to be sure. 1st I hooked it up to another computer & it worked fine. So back to my regular usage computer but using a different USB port where I had a USB stick that has never given me any trouble. Thank you for my Christmas present, Greg

I'm glad I was able to help. :)
So it's not a faulty cable? If not and if it works fine with a different USB port but with the same cable, it could be a faulty USB port. You could try reinstalling or updating the chipset driver for the mobo, to see if that fixes things up, but if the port is faulty I'm afraid that this won't do you any good. So it's up to you if you'd like to try it or not.

Happy Holidays, Greg! Cheers!
