Motherboard: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/RAMPAGE_II_EXTREME/specifications/

Yesterday, my motherboard network adapter stopped working. Shows a red "X" in the system tray like when the cable is disconnected. Unfortunately I don't have any system restore points to go back to - I had disabled it due to disk space issues. The day before (the 19th), my system tray network icon had showed the yellow triangle for poor connectivity but I had not had any issues actually browsing the internet - not sure if it was an omen but thought I'd mention it if the information helps. I had installed some Windows updates on the 19th and I uninstalled all of them to see if they had caused the problem. Nothing else was installed on the 19th. On the 20th I had zero connectivity (red "X").

I have a dual boot system (XP on a second drive) and everything works fine on XP (from where I am posting this). My setup is a cable coming from my modem to a router and then splitting from the router to my wife's and my PC. This has worked fine until yesterday. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the motherboard ethernet adapter and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. Still no connection on Windows 7.

One thing I noticed is that the 1394 adapter shows in device manager on XP but not on Win 7. I can't figure how to get it to show and I don't recall if I ever saw it on Win 7 device manager. Screenshot: http://tinypic.com/r/t51068/9

Tried that a few times. It tries to fix problem and then says there is a problem with the network adapter..

PS - It states "windows couldn't automatically bind the ip protocol stack to the network adapter".

Thanks. I tried all except the last one. I got stuck at: "3. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey that corresponds to the network adapter that is connected to the network." since I have no idea what the GUID is.

PS - Hmm. I didn't try the respondent's (cretaceousfiligree's) suggestion. I see what you mean. Will do that when I get home tonight.
