It just happened recently about an hour ago. I was just browsing and then there is this pop sound that came out of my CPU. It's not that super loud but loud enough to scare me for a bit. After I heard the pop sound it shuts down immediately. I didn't turn it on because I was afraid something bad might happen. I unplugged everything and checked my MOBO and the other components and I didn't saw anything burnt and it didn't even smell that something got burnt or exploded. I plugged everything back again and the computer seems working fine.

Can someone explain it to me what just happened? I have no idea if I should continue using this computer after that scary pop sound. I don't even know if that might happen again.

Solution
It is quite reasonable to assume that the PSU is to blame. It is quite old and likely a budget tier 4/5 PSU, using it any further is asking for trouble. I would advise against using this rig further until PSU is replaced - it doesn't have to be an expensive tier 1/2 PSU, a budget tier 3 would do just fine.

But now the issue is almost irrelevant (for you, at least) since you are getting a new rig. However, do not sell/give this one to anyone until the PSU is replaced.

Use the following list for reference - for this rig, a solid 400W PSU from tier 3 is all it needs:

My computer's specs as of now.

MOBO: Asrock ConRoe 1333-d667
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 2.66GHz
RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR2 ram
PSU: Thermaltake 500w

I think we had this pc for about 7 or 8 years by now. We are also buying a new PC this christmas.
