Question about dual channel, RAM pairs and mixed RAM?

Greetings people,

I have a small question regarding having dual channel memory, so here it goes:

My own built PC currently has an ASRock motherboard (H87M Pro4) with 2x4GB memory, which is dual channel right now.

I quote the following of the manual from the mobo:

"For dual channel configuration, you always need to install identical (the same brand, speed, size and chip-type) DDR3 DIMM pairs"

The motherboard has four slots, A1, A2, B1, B2.

Now for the question:
If I were to buy 2x8 GB, with all the same specs (except for the brand and memory size) and use 2x8 in priority slots 1 (A2 + B2) and then the other 2x4 in priority slots 2 (A1 + B1) would they still be dual channel, despite being different sizes or brands? Or would they rather be single channel or the rare chance of not working at all?

Also, if the above won't work, If I were only to have newly bought RAM, would 2x8 be better or 4x4?

I'm also going to mention that I do have an Intel 4790 and a dedicated Nvidia graphics card.

Cheers

Solution
It is best to have 2x8 as a single kit in the A2 and B2 slots. Test the system first with the 16GB kit.
Its never a good idea to mix kits however you can always try.
