Hi
I have over the last year been experiencing spikes and fps drops in almost any game with my Radeon R9 270, and have been testing with my friends GTX 960 to see if it was my graphics card which caused the lag, it was. So now i am looking for a replacement since my R9 270 probably is broken or just outdated.

I play games like Paladins, Farcry Primal, Path of exile, Diablo 3 and COD games

My question is which graphics card i should be looking for, im leaning towards Nvidia since i have had some bad experiences with Radeon. My budget is negotiable, and im simply just looking for a replacement that doesnt kill my wallet but covers my needs, i dont need a super computer that can run the most needy games in highest but just run stable in most new releases.

If you have suggestions to other upgrades i might want to make then im all ears.

My pc specs are:
Corsair 500W
8 gb ram
i5-4670k
Asus Z97(something, probably z) motherboard
1 tb HDD
500gb HDD

Peace

Ehh.. I wouldn't recommend any old Kepler card, 770 and 680 used to be faster than a 960 but are now actually slower in almost all benchmarks of newer titles (often even slower than the 1050..). Nvidia don't...

There are many models of each card but even the cheapest one will work just fine.

GTX 960 £160-250 (10% better than your card)

GTX 770 £115-300 (35% better than your card)

GTX 680 £290-430 (25% better than your card)

GTX 1060 3GB £185-250 (85% better than your card)

GTX 1060 6GB £225-300 (95% better than your card)

GTX 970 £240-425 (75% better than your card)

This is just a small example of the NVIDIA cards, which perform much better than AMD. I'd recommend the GTX 1060 3/6GB as they are the greatest value for money.

The 960 did fix it yeah, it still lagged in Gotham City Imposters, but thats probably just a bag engine in that game

Ehh.. I wouldn't recommend any old Kepler card, 770 and 680 used to be faster than a 960 but are now actually slower in almost all benchmarks of newer titles (often even slower than the 1050..). Nvidia don't focus anymore on older architectures, only on Pascal now, but 900 series (Maxwell) are similar to Pascal-cards architecture-wise so I can see them benefiting still from newer game-drivers at least.

With that rig, I'd get a midrange card, 1060 sounds like a great option (you can go for the 3GB if you play on 1080p, 6GB if 1440p). AMD's 470 and 480 are good cards too, quite similar in performance to the 1060 but usually faster in dx12 and slower in dx11. A used 970 might also be a good option, it's quite a bit faster than the 960 (but 470/480 and 1060 are certainly better and faster cards than the 970, so it has to be a good deal).
