Hello,

I'm looking for a dedicated graphic card for my Dell Inspiron 535s desktop. The main purpose to install a graphic card is that I'm using Adobe Photoshop for a lot of photo processing and I think it's holding me back because of the low GPU and VRAM. So I need the card specifically for photo processing and may be video editing in future.
It's a 6 year old PC, specs:

Processor: 2.80 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E7400
RAM: 4 GB DDR2
Graphic Card: Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator GMA X3100 with 256 MB VRAM.
Max Power Output: 250 watts

As per my research, I found 2 cards,
Zotac GT 710 2 GB or GT 610
Gigabyte GeForce GV-N710D3-2GL 2GB PCI-Express Graphics Card

I think one of these must fulfil my requirement.
Please suggest if I'm making a right choice or not. Do suggest some cards if you think that'd help.

Solution
For Adobe, I would recommend an AMD FirePro W5100 Workstation GPU. It is a "pro" GPU specifically designed for productivity applications, and CAD.

This is the higher end of the low end cards.

I would say go for a 710 over the 610 but both are fairly weak, i would recommend a more future proof card such as a r7 250 or 240 but if its not long term a 730 or 720 would run photoshop fine.

Thanks but the first 2 card won't even support the power supply my desktop has and 730 appears to be too much considering my usage. What do you say?

in what way does it not support the cards?
A 730 could be a bit powerful its just 710 is quite weak and outdated, I would say go for the 720 or 710 if you have to.

you power consumption right now with the current hardware you have is
Intel E7400 + Intel G31T-DM Motherboard + 4gb Ram + Hard drive is approximatively 35W - 161W
your power supply was designed by Bestec Model TFX0250PSWB which provide safely barely 200 watts sustained.
your problem is not what the best cards for the job but, what card can you run on that 200w power supply...

my first suggestion get a new power supply, even a cx500 from corsair would be 100 times better than what you have currently

adding a GT 610 on your current configuration will push your power consumption to 190w
adding a GT 710 on your current configuration will push your power consumption to 180w

adding HD 5450 on your current configuration will push your power consumption to 180w
adding HD 6450 on your current configuration will push your power consumption to 188w

adding a GT 720 on your current configuration will push your power consumption to 210w (looking at PSU failure)
adding a GTX660 will push it to 330w ( this will not work at all)
adding a HD 6850 will push it to 312w ( this will not work at all)

with a PSU of 500w, get a nice GTX 660 of GTX 7505ti which when your ready to upgrade to another motherboard will follow you around.

Thanks for your suggestion!
Here's some more information about my desktop, my PSU is not Bestec Model TFX0250PSW, it's hipro hp-d2503a001. The other constraint is that the height of the box is just 3.9 inches so it won't support a lot of high end cards. I might have to go with the low profile(less height) cards.

Suggestions?

Quadro k420 requires about 41W, however the 710 just needs 19w and the price for 1 GB k420 is 3 times the 2Gb of 710.
I'm confused if I shall go ahead with the K420.

the k420 is the go foe if you are goinf to video editing... but i highlt recommend getting even a cheap cxm 550 or 450 w psu.. those are cheap.. ill make sure and let you know abt the gpu

I think the quadro k420 Will be the best choice for you.. but with your 250w psu.. iand since its old i think it will be able to output arns 220w max.. now so just to be on the safe side the gt 710 is the best if you dont plan on switiing psu.. other wise. k420 is clearly the winner

I don't think my PSU will be able to handle the power that this card needs.
