Hey guys. I'm looking to upgrade to a gtx 1060 and wondering if it would be better to go for a 3gb model or a 6gb model? I play at 1080p 60Hz Yes i know about a GTX 1070 would be a good investment but im short on money. Thanks for any help!

TL DR - 1060 3GB or 6GB & why

The RX 470 is not faster than the 3GB 1060. The only thing the 470 has going for it is that it's a little cheaper and has more VRAM. It does not perform better though.

The RX 480 4GB is an option if you want to go with an AMD card. I would not get a 470 when the 1060 3GB and RX 480 4GB are not much more expensive with better performance.

You asked about the 3GB...

If you can fit a 6GB model in your budget that is what I would recommend. This Gigabyte Windforce model is a good deal for a full size cooler with 2 fans. The single fan mini cards should be fine too but they might run a little louder.

The reason I recommend the 6GB model is because I would not feel comfortable buying a card with less than 4GB of VRAM going into 2017. In most games the 3GB and 6GB models perform very similarly but Rise of the Tomb Raider shows that there can be a significant difference in games that are VRAM hogs. Obviously this is just a guess, but I think games like Rise of the Tomb Raider that want 4GB+ of VRAM will only become more common as time passes.

So you would say RX 470 over GTX 1060 3GB?

You asked about the 3GB 1060 vs the 6GB 1060 and in that comparison I would choose the 6GB 1060 for the reason I mentioned in my first post. When comparing the 470 and the 3GB 1060 I would not hesitate to choose the 3GB 1060 though. It's about 20% more powerful.
