hi brand new cpu and stock cooler (with the red fan) amd overdrive reports idle of 70c .. could this even be possible? i thought the max operating temp is 72c .. that would mean the cpu @ idle is just 2c? seems way too cold for a cpu!

My x4 760k tends to show a maximum thermal margin of 70. Quite frankly, an idle temperature or thermal margin isn't that interesting because it's when the CPU is under a full load where such measurements become important.

CPUs won't operate under ambient room temperature using normal cooling solutions, unless you're cooling with liquid nitrogen or some other fancy method.
