I have a Compaq Presario sr1265CL PC that I'm using as a Media Server. It's running windows 7 32 bit. I am trying to use a Toshiba MK5059GSXP ata hard drive that I pulled from my old laptop. The bios won't recognize the drive. I put the drive into my other computer and It was recognized correctly. I used known working cables and power connectors so that isn't the problem. The weird part is I already have two other drives on the Media server working correctly. One is Sata and the other IDE. Both sata ports on my motherboard are tested working. I'm out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Could there be some strange driver situation that I'm missing? Thank you.

Did you check your jumpering? Most old IDE drives shipped in computers are set to "cable select", but that only works if you have that type of cable. You may need to jumper it to master.

HDD's really don't need any extra drivers, so that's not going to be the issue. In fact there is no driver loaded at all before the BIOS reads the ID of the drive.

Edit: I just realized your model is actually a SATA drive. Your mention of an IDE drive confused me.

It is probably a hardware issue with the drive in that case. If the drive is not clicking and is spinning, then the issue is probably related to a corrupted G-list or corrupted S.M.A.R.T. tables. Usually it's an easy recovery but it requires expensive equipment like PC-3000 to accomplish. If the data is important, you should seek professional recovery.

The drive works in my other pc. That makes me think its something to do with the Compaq.
