upgrading card, question about 6pin/molex

Hello, I am recently thinking about upgrading my ancient hd 6670 to an rx 460 2gb. (on extremely tight budget)

There are several models I have been looking at, all the same price, and they all have the exact same power requirements, including the card in question. (minimum being 400w, recommended 450w). One of them has a 6pin connector, where as the other models do not. my psu is 480w, not too sure about manufacturer or 12v rail info, as it is prebuilt and in their infinite wisdom, put the tag on the side that is against the case.

ANYWAYS, my psu has a single 4pin molex that splits off into another 4pin, so my question is could i safely use the 4 pin and it's extra split off 4 pin to power the 6pin model if i choose to get it? with 4 pin to 6 pin adapter of course. (I assume since they are all the same power requirement, that the 6 pin model could offer better/more stable performance as well as oc-ability)

I don't think my other components are needed, but here they are just in case

mobo: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M4A78T-E
8gb ram, ddr3 1333. forget manufacture, but no high end expensive stuff
cpu: ph II x4 970 oc to 4.0gh
basic 500gb hdd
removed the dvd/cd drive, never use it.

Uhm I think that about covers it, thanks very much in advance

No. You should forget your graphics card upgrade and swap out your power supply for later when you can upgrade your graphics card. Ignoring that, I would forget the XFX and opt for either the MSI or PowerColor version (both links are to the PowerColor version though).

Hello, and thank you for the reply. As I said, I am on a super tight and extremely limited budget, so buying a gpu and a psu is way out of the question for me. I know will need another one eventually, it is kind of old. I bought this pc I think back in 2011 from newegg and it's an Ibuypower brand. The only things that have been replaced in it since then was the gt430 (i think? been a long time) and the motherboard, as I was just getting into overclocking and didn't know what I was doing and ended up frying it lol.

The card in question comes with its own 6pin to 4pin adapter, otherwise I wouldn't even consider it. But if it comes highly recommended against, could I just get one of the non-6pin versions since upgrading the psu is out of my price range?

By the way, I've read from multiple sources that this card has a TDP of <75, which is what I've also read is what the slot itself supplies.

Thanks again

The power requirements you're seeing (400 min/450 rec) are for the entire system.

The graphics card gets up to 75 watts of power from the PCI-Ex16 slot. Any card that does not have an external power connector cannot exceed 75 watts of power. Any graphics card that does have the 6-pin PCI-E power port can draw up to an additional 75 watts of power.

If your system is running fine (no sudden shutdowns) with your current HD 6670, you *MAY* be ok with an RX460 without a PCI-E power port, but if you want my real recommendation, put your money into a power supply upgrade and then save for a new graphics card.

Thank you for your reply. I've never had power issues of any kind, other than maybe some driver crashes when i oc the 6670 too much, as its voltages are locked.

So, should I forget the 6 pin version and just go with one of the ones that are slot powered only?

well, here are all the models I've been looking at, which one do you recommend?
