Can shutting down by pressing the power button on the case harm my computer?

So, my grandfather doesn't know how to use a computer, he walked into my room and shut it down by the case button, can it harm my PC? it has a H110M MoBo

Physically harm it, probably not. But logically harm it yes. What I mean is, if something is attempting to be written to disk and gets partially written, it could be corrupted. You could lose data. Using the shutdown option, allows the OS to ensure that everything is successfully written and all the buffers are flushed.

Won't affect the hardware at all. Possibly it'll affect data being written, if it's a change to existing data. For sure you'll lose any and all unsaved data.

Ah, I think nothing got corrupted then, I was just looking at some pics. Also, the power button was pressed for a half a second - not 5 seconds (when it's pressed for 5 seconds forces shutdown as far as I know)

Windows can interpret the power button as a clean shutdown signal. It sounds like that is what happened. You should be OK.

A lot depends on case and bios settings. Mine can be anything from quick push is sleep or hibernate, full reset or shutdown
