I have an X58A-UD3R motherboard and seeing as there are only Sata 1 ports on this mobo, will an eSATA device work in this? I don't mind buying a converter so the ports work, I just wanted to know so I don't have to hunt for an original SATA device.

That series of Gigabyte MBs were equipped with a slew of internal SATA data connectors (ports) as I recall. While most of them were rated at SATA 2 (3 Gb/s), I'm nearly certain a few were SATA 3 (6 Gb/s).

I can't imagine why you would need to connect a HDD to the MB's eSATA port. (You understand it's a combo USB/eSATA port right?). Couldn't you just internally install the HDD to one of the SATA ports? It really wouldn't matter from a speed point-of-view whether it's connected to a SATA 2 or SATA 3 port with that series of MB.
