Computer shuts off when GPU under load -- issue with Graphics Card or PSU?

I know others have posted about this issue before, but I'm trying to figure out how to identify which component is the problem ...

So, here are the relevant specs:

CPU: Intel i5-6600
PSU: Corsair CX 650M
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 980

Everything was working fine for a while (at least a year). Then, all of the sudden, the computer started shutting off suddenly when the GPU was under load (i.e., while I was playing games). This happened 2-3 times, then the computer no longer booted up at all. Ultimately, I had to replace the motherboard, processor, RAM, and the PSU (which didn't cost me anything because those components were still under warranty). Verdict at the time was a faulty PSU. Things were working fine for about 3 months, when the issue started happening again now. I was able to trigger the computer shutting off by simply running a graphics benchmarking program.

So, i figured this time that it's somewhat unlikely I got 2 bad PSUs in a row, so I decided to change one of the few remaining components that I hadn't replaced previously: the GPU. Fortunately, I still had my old GTX 560 lying around, so I stuck that in, updated the drivers, and ran the same benchmarking program. No shutoff!

So ... my question now is, do I truly have a bum graphics card (the GTX 980, I mean)? Or is the PSU I went with not actually sufficient to run it under load despite the fact that Nvidia says that the power requirements are 500 W and I have 650? The power requirements of the GTX 560 are definitely lower, according to nVidia, so is it just that I need a better PSU? I could replace the graphics card with a new one, I suppose, but that's a lot of money to spend if all I really need is a different PSU. Just seems odd that everything worked fine for a while with this set up and all of a sudden it stopped working?

Solution
After doing some experimenting, it turns out it was actually the power supply. Ultimately, I upgraded to a Corsair AX 850 and the problem hasn't recurred yet.

that 980 should just be using a bit more than the 560,
best way to find out if its faulty is use another pc (your family member or friend) and test it, and if the same occurs its most likely your gpu going down
