You might need KB3138612. This is a well documented issue. If you Google it there are thousands of results for it.
Some of these say to delete the data store, some to download specific patches.
I have found that installing KB3138612 solves the problem for me, on multiple installs.
This is an updated Windows update agent that includes additional telemetry as well.

Go to a CMD prompt
net stop wuauserv
Install the patch
Restart your PC
Check for updates

Let us know how you go..

Yes, is highly recommended after a fresh Windows install, follow install all Mobo specific drivers. These are often found on Mobo's vendor website unless the Mobo is so outdated, in which case, oooops, see if you can buy an original CD for it from eBay.

For the rest of you reading, never throw anything away, and if you bought this second hand blah-blah wo discs, first thing to do, before anything else, download all drivers from vendor's website and keep it in your archive otherwise you end up having to post here at Tom's and asking...

@jsmithepa One of us is reading the OP wrong.

...however my windows seems to search for updates for eternity...

This to me reads as "Windows Update" not "Drivers" as he already said he loaded his drivers.

Windows update hanging for eternity is a common problem after a fresh install these days.

So, if I read it wrong, my apologies.

Same here everytime I fresh install Win7 and update it via WU. WU search for update forever.

Manually download and install these :
1. KB2852386
2. KB3102810
3. KB947821

After restart WU working normal again.
Hope that helps.
