As is probably evident, I have an MSI laptop that is a few years old by now, and definitely has felt those years. I would like to try and salvage everything I can off of it. The hinges are pretty busted, the power jack was already replaced once and apparently the cooling issues I've found with it are standard.

The question is, can I get a motherboard that would support most of the stuff I would take off of this that isn't just another MSI laptop one? How well would it run as a desktop unit for today's price points? Is it even worth it? What of the slightly worn keyboard and the nearly faultless screen? Is the question even worth it outside of a thought exercise and is it practical to do so rather than just taking it apart and selling off replacement pieces or junking the lot?

There's not really much to salvage off a laptop - motherboards tend to be quite proprietary. Really, the only thing you're likely to be able to use again is the hard drive. You can't just get a desktop motherboard and slap on your old laptop components.
