I'd like to see many answers therefore this'll be a discussion.. Anywho.

I'm wondering if a second gen. core i5 can play modern games (BF3, Tomb Raider/Rise Of, Prototype 2, as examples) and how well?

I realize saying "core i5" means nothing so as an example a core i5 - 6600K @ 3.50Ghz and be equipped with a GTX 960 (of which I've read is a great video card).

Solution
a desk top core i5 like a sandy bridge (i5 2500k) will still do a great job with a modern card like a gtx 960 no problem even a 970 it would still push it just fine

I see... Every day I'm more enticed to build an actual gaming computer, but not necessarily with the latest and greatest.

I'm looking at video cards currently, specifically the GTX 750 Ti and GTX 1050 Ti (fairly certain the 1050 is better than the 750 but I could be wrong).

As for a processor, fourth gen (Haswell, I believe) which would be mid range and an i5.

And for RAM, 16GB because 8GB is a sweet spot and despite wanting to go with 32GB I've read that it's difficult to consume even 16GB, so 16 is probably plentiful.

Also been thinking of putting a 750/1050 into my current motherboard but very unsure as I'd assume my processor would bottleneck it as well as my 4GB of RAM.
