My motherboard is a gigabyte ga-f2a88xm-ds2 micro atx and the bios page is http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4726#bios I was wondering if should update to latest or just enough for my new cpu to work (athlon 880k) as I'm currently using an fm2 cpu and using f1 version bios

BIOS Updates are usually only recommended when the computer shows any signs of problems as it USED to be a dangerous procedure to be done (I'm talking late 90s mid 2000s here).
As you're running the very first BIOS release, you could update do f7 which is the last stable release. Please don't rely on beta releases as those could still cause some headache.
