I have two HDDs, each 1TB. Windows is installed on only one of them. I recently connected my friend's HDD via a SATA-to-USB cable to recover his partitions after he accidentally deleted them.

I returned him his HDD today and after a reboot, I've been getting this message.

I'm guessing some boot data was written on my friend's HDD. How do I fix this?

Update: It was fixed. However, after a reboot I started getting a new message: Disk read error. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

Solution
Unfortunately, problems with both your primary and secondary drives could result in overall system drop in performance.
So, it would be nice to just back up the most important data stored on both drives. (to a flash drive lets say)

Once you do that, you can run some of these tools on both of them: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
See if there are some abnormal values in the SMART reports.

Also, read errors could be caused by connection problem. So, it would be nice to attach the drives with different SATA and power cables, so you make sure it is not the connection.

Let me know how this goes,

Hi there rizzo183,

First of all, there's no attached picture. You can upload the screenshot to an image hosting website and post the link over here.

How did you recover the partitions? Did you get some error messages?

It is your system that can't really boot now right? (or your friend's one)

I believe that running a start up repair would be a good start.

Cheers,

The picture was attached, for some reason it didn't show up in the preview.

I checked the BIOS and figured it didn't list one of my two HDDs. So I just pressed all the cables back in to make sure they're connected properly, and it's now working. I guess I must have accidentally pulled on the SATA cable of one of my HDDs while trying to disconnect my friend's HDD.

UPDATE: New problem after a reboot. Check my reply below.

Hi there rizzo183,

It's great you've sorted this out. :)

Was the HDD that was missing your OS one? If this was the case, then it's all fine.
If your secondary HDD was not properly connected and your system was unable to boot, you need to keep in mind that probably a part of the OS installation is stored on your secondary drive. This could happen when more than one HDD is attached to the system during installation.

Cheers,

@D_Know_WD

Yes. I know from a previous experience that both my HDDs have boot files on them, and are required at startup.

There's a new problem though. My computer was running really slow all of a sudden. After a reboot, I've started getting the message Disk read error. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

So I'm guessing maybe it wasn't just a simple case of a loose cable. Any idea why this might have happened and how to fix this?
