I just wanted to get an opinion on how much of an upgrade I am actually getting with my processor, I'm upgrading from an AMD 6350 fx to and i7 6700k 4.0, I currently have a gtx 970 so am I right in thinking the older processor was a bottleneck on my system ?

Solution
Yes that is the mainly the cause of the bottleneck. However, why are you jumping straight to the i7? Do you plan on rendering or editing videos? Streaming? Are you looking to do a lot of multitasking? If not, I would strongly recommend to downgrade to an i5 and save $100 and use that towards something else. The GTX 970 is still a force to be reckon with, so no upgrade needed there.

I have saved a fair amount of money I want to dedicate to upgrading my PC with the main thing I want to do is play most current games at a good frame rate, however I do occasionally steam and it is something I want to do, money isn't really much of an issue here

If money is truly not an object, then go for the i7-6700K as you see an increase benefit. Also you will need to get z!70 board, with either an air cooler or AIO liqud cooler. I would also recommend 16GB of DDR4 RAM. If you would like, sell the 970 and upgrade to either a 1070 or 1080. Or if you can find the same 970, you could go SLI mode, if your motherboard accepts it.

Yes it does, you will also need a SLI bridge as well. Again, SLI will work properly if you have the same chip and memory so a 970 4GB and 960 2GB..or....970 4GB and 960 2GB...both of these will have problems.
