Motherboards Not Able To Detect All The RAM

I have heard have cases where people's motherboards have not been able to detect all the RAM they put in. For example, they put in 16gb of RAM and only 11gb showed up. Is there a way to prevent it or at least avoid it? I am planning on getting 4 4gb sticks of RAM. I am worried that only let's say 12gb or worse show up. Should I just have 2 8gb sticks of RAM? And while we are on this subject, does quad-channel RAM have any impact on performance compared to duel-channel performance.
Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of that happening in all my years of tinkering with PC's Honestly Don't worry about it, Quad channel memory compared to dual channel is the same, even though I'd recommend 2x 8 gb sticks just for more upgrade paths down the line if you want 32gb's but overall 16gb's will hold you up with no issues.
