Buy a "future proof" PSU or one that fits my current needs?

As the title suggests, I am curious as to whether I should buy a corsair RM1000i for my next PSU build so that I never have to worry about upgrading it or whether I should get one that just fits my current needs.

I don't mind spending the extra money for the corsair PSU if it minds I won't have to worry about upgrading it in the future or for new builds I could just transfer it over. Not sure if I will ever use 1000W of power though. Main focus is gaming and general use.

the G3 is just a superb performer and apart from it's efficiency one of the best PSUs on the market right now.
the 850W version is actually cheaper than the 750 right now: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LY4OJYJ/ref=psdc_1161760_t1_B015YEI7LK?th=1

any of those units are perfectly fine and top of the crop.
the performance difference between the G3 & the G2 will be unnoticable to you basically.
but it's an impressive unit, even johnnyguru was surprised when testing it

I tell this to EVERYONE I speak with.

When building a computer, DO NOT go cheap on the PSU, OR THE CPU COOLER.

Future proof your PSU get a good one.

When rebuilding and upgrading computers, the components you will always keep and be able to utilize 100% is the CPU cooler and the PSU. A good PSU should lastyou several builds, and should give you plenty of overhead on the rails.

This makes sure you are never running your PSU @ close to 100%, this will improve its life and improve the life of all components.

GET A GOOD PSU. if you ever wanted to add another card, hey i bought a decent PSU SO I CAN, otherwise your going to be rebuilding and purchasing another PSU just to throw away your old one that works perfectly fine.

If you are not running 3 1080s, then you will be fine with 650watts...if that. No need to go all out on a PSU. A simple SuperNOVA G2 650w 80+ Gold or Corsair RS750i will do just fine. If you have the loot go for it, but that's like a buying a 50,000 sq ft house for 5 people.

Getting a good quality PSU is important, but I think the OP is asking more about extra wattage. The overall trend in power consumption has been downward for a long time now, the last generation of GPU's was stuck on an old process and CPU's like the 9590 were always something of an anomaly. I'd say spec out a "dream build" using the components available today, and figure a PSU capable of powering it would be sufficient for whatever you wind up getting in the future.

future proofing by higher watts makes not really any sense since the power consumption of parts is decreasing in the last 5+ years

so no need to overspend on unnecessary wattage.

however if you'd be going for an ultrasilent build staying below the PSU load for the fan to spin up is interesting.
otherwise just a waste of money that does exactly nothing in terms of future proofing.

Any particular reason EVGA is before corsair?

EVGA
https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-SuperNOVA-Modular-Warranty-220-G3-1000-X1/dp/B005BE058W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482878981&sr=8-1&keywords=EVGA%2Bsupernova%2Bg3&th=1

Corsair
https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-RM750i-Modular-Supply-Certified/dp/B00YPNSQTU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482879066&sr=8-2&keywords=corsair+750w+rm

Currently they are both almost the same price and I've always been told that corsair is the best of the best when it comes to PSUs.

With some 1000W PSU's only around $20 more

It's hard not to consider them. There is no negative effects of having a high wattage PSU is there?

Wholeheartedly agree with Isokolon.. The Supernova G3 is an amazing power suppy, at a price that's affordable to most if you have money to build a high-end overclockable system. It doesn't get much better at the moment, unless you want to go extreme and get something like a seasonic prime, which is probably the best power supply out there for consumers right now at the "sweet spot" wattage of around 650-850 watts.
